Tomorrow we will focus on Michael Moore's "Idiot Nation". I would like to see some of you posting journals on the blog. I'm happy to see we've gained a few more of you. Let's get everybody on!
Be prepared to discuss Moore's bashing of American school systems and level of education. Ask yourself whether or not you agree with all that he is saying. Perhaps we can conduct our own experiment within Long Island University, quizzing faculty members and those high up in administrative positions! What would be the point of this experiment and what would it prove? Moreover, if it does prove something, what can/should we do about it?
I will be handing out the first formal essay assignment tomorrow as well! ~Draft is due February 8th~

It's late at night and before I go to sleep I read. Tonite its " Idiot Nation" and I have come to realize that I read the book before. It makes me angry still when I read it.
I have a first hand view of the mis management of the educational system. I went to Prospect H.S. and I can say with authority that I wasted 2 years with teachers that failed to teach me Algebra. I did finally learn algebra, from a TA grad student that took the time to explain the concepts.
I do not only blame uncaring teachers I also blame the administration and the government that treats the education of the general public as bothersome gadfly. The only time that they think of the educational system is when they have to take money from it or when the voting public demands that they fix the problems that arose from the lack of money.
I made it through the school system by seeking refuge it the halloed halls of the Brooklyn Public Library. The place that sits even lower than schools on the list of priorities that politicians use to find out what's important to their constituents. The general public wants to care about schools but they are busy trying to maintain a decent standard of living and really don't have much time to worry about the standards of education. There are many reasons why we are a truly an idiot nation
but the main reason is that we have allowed to happen. Heck ya 'll da president don read none
Wow Mustapha! You have President Bush's dialect down to a tee!
It is very interesting to hear your own personal perspective on our education system in America.
I think one of Moore's best points in the chapter is when he offers the suggestion to the public to treat teachers better. One week a year (National Teacher Appreciation Week) is hardly enough for the countless days teachers spend molding the minds of our youth! (I am not biased here just because my mother is a high school math teacher at all levels and I myself am involved in the teaching realm)
It's about time we respect and praise our good teachers to uphold and even improve morale!
Love you mom!
that was an intresting reading i a loved it!!!
Reading "Idiot nation" was really interesting , even though the truth really hurts but the american education system really needs some change because the students are suffering, and you cant really blame the teachers beacuse they dont give them the respect they deserve. Besides, the schoool system emphasizes too much on standardized tests. I think there is a big room for reform.
Reading "Idiot Nation" was interresting. It is telling people needs to change the educational system for the students' sake of learning. I know not all teachers are to blame for the students' bad perfomance in school. I think sometimes students may find going to school is boring, but someday in the future they would realize that having an education is very important. I think the teachers should be given some respect for teaching. When I was in junior high school, there was a Math teacher that helped me and many students impove. Everyday morning at school before the school officially begin, he would do many math problems from homework so we could understand it much better. I would say I am grateful for his effort that he put for helping me understand Math better and get higher grades.
